Greatness Beyond Measure will host the 1st Annual STOMP the Violence event on Saturday at the Robert L. Taylor Community Complex in Sarasota. Phone Scam Warning

We haven't received reports about this scheme in Sarasota County, but phone scams are nothing new so the warning is certainly worth sharing. Apparently residents are being contacted by people claiming they have a package to deliver who ask for personal financial information including credit card numbers to complete the delivery. In the case reported here, the caller claims to be with Walmart, but it can be any store or company. Remember, if anyone calls and asks for bank information or credit card numbers, or claims to be a relative and asks you to send money, JUST HANG UP. If you are concerned about a potential scam, call the actual business they claim to represent, or contact someone you trust to ask them about it. If you feel you have been victimized contact your local law enforcement agency.

Kids' Safety Rally Saturday

For families looking for FREE kid-friendly fun this weekend, the Child Protection Center is holding its 8th Annual Kids' Safety Rally this Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will be held at Central Church of Christ, 6221 Proctor Road in Sarasota. The Rally is a community event focused on health and safety for children. Parents can get child identification kits, and the kids can learn about school bus safety and nutrition. There will be puppet shows and the Sheriff's Office helicopter will be on display. The event is held each year in remembrance of Carlie Brucia, a Sarasota girl who was kidnapped and killed after walking home from a friend's house in 2004.

Florida Proving Effective Against Pill Problem

Law enforcement activity, regulatory actions, new state laws and county ordinances are combining to be an effective solution in the fight against misuse and abuse of potent pain pills. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) found the number of Florida doctors appearing in the nationwide list of the top 100 Oxycodone purchasing physicians dropped from 90 in 2010 to only 13 in 2011. Because of new regulations, pain clinic practitioners can no longer dispense these controlled substances directly to patients but must write prescriptions to be filled at local pharmacies. While it would seem the same amount of drugs would still be dispensed overall, as you will see in this DEA press release, total monthly purchases of Oxycodone are decreasing. Sarasota County and its residents have been a powerful ally to combat prescription drug epidemic and these numbers show that the collective effort is working.

Lego Man Released

The international saga of Lego Man has ended for the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. This story began October 25, 2011, when the figure, known as Ego Leonard, was found on Siesta Key Beach and stored as found property until his "owner" came forward to claim him. That didn't happen, so yesterday he was turned over to a designee of the man who originally brought him to our attention. We have posted one of the many TV news reports that captured what seems to be the beginning of a new chapter in this tall tale. You can watch it on our YouTube channel.

Strike Force Arrests 50 in "Operation Southwest Shopper"

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested 13 individuals for making illegal prescription drug purchases as part of "Operation Southwest Shopper." A total of 50 individuals were arrested last week in the multi-county sweep organized by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and other agencies participating in the Statewide Drug Strike Force created by Governor Rick Scott. As Sheriff Knight states in the press release, "Illegal prescription drug trafficking does not recognize jurisdictional boundaries, so fighting this form of crime effectively requires a cooperative and coordinated effort." National AMBER Alert Awareness Day

Today is National AMBER Alert Awareness Day. AMBER stands for "America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response," a program created in honor of Amber Hagerman who on this day in 1996 was abducted while riding her bicycle and murdered. The nationwide alert system provides emergency broadcast messages to the public when law enforcement determines that a child has been abducted. It shares information about the child and the abductor, including physical descriptions and vehicle information to help lead to the child's recovery. More than 550 children have been recovered as a result of the AMBER Alert network since it was established in 2003 thanks to the partnership between law enforcement, news media and alert citizens.

Deputies Catch Burglar in the Act

Kudos to Sarasota County Sheriff's Office deputies who caught a burglar in the act last night. Just before 11 p.m., deputies responded to The Salvation Army store on 17th Street in Sarasota and found 39-year-old Elijah Smith hiding inside. Smith had broken a window and was attempting to steal money from cash registers. Smith was charged with Burglary, Criminal Mischief and Larceny and is currently in the Sarasota County Jail.

Americans Binge Drinking More

With excessive alcohol at the center of local headlines this week, the release of this national study seemed quite timely and appropriate to share. New research found Americans binge drink more than previously thought, and adults do so more frequently. What's worse, they also consume more drinks when binge drinking. Binge drinking is found to be more common among those with household incomes in excess of $75,000. However, the largest number of drinks consumed per occasion was greatest for those with household incomes of less than $25,000. Sheriff's Office Helicopter Spots Burglary Suspect

Thanks to our "eye in the sky," the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested a 19-year-old man for a number of residential burglaries in Sarasota yesterday. Around 4:30 p.m., we received a report of a burglary in-progress in the 6000 block of Colonial Drive. Deputies responded and the agency helicopter Air-1 took flight. Once the crew was in the area they spotted the suspect breaking into another house and directed deputies to his location. The suspect, Matthew Benvenuto, was taken into custody and has been tied to at least four break-ins. The investigation is still ongoing.

Stay Safe on Crowded Roads

The final few days of holiday shopping are in full swing, and whether you're hitting the stores or heading off to celebrate the season, Sarasota County traffic is tough to navigate this time of year. As of the end of November, traffic crashes and fatalities are up in 2011. While enforcement efforts are also in high gear, we'd rather you stay safe than need us to respond to an accident. So please bring your patience with you, remember the basic rules of the road and practice defensive driving. Of course, don't drink and drive. As a final reminder, Florida's "Move Over" law requires drivers to move at least one lane away from ANY emergency vehicle with flashing lights. And if you can't get out of their way slow down to 20 miles per hour below the posted speed limit.

State Warns of Scam Web Site

We have posted numerous warnings about scams and sham Internet web sites, and now it seems a critical government agency has fallen victim to this problem as well. Floridians using search engines to find the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) online services web site are apparently being directed to a fraudulent site that asks for their name and credit card information are being charged to get to the official DHSMV site. Please read this warning and bookmark the legitimate links to their web site.

Veterinarian Helps Local K-9 Teams

The latest edition of Sarasota Pet magazine includes a story about Dr. Anne Chauvet and her efforts to help this community and its animals. One of Dr. Chauvet's benevolent projects of late was the donation of K-9 trauma kits to teams from all area law enforcement agencies. One of the grateful recipients of her generosity is Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brian Biegel and his K-9 partner Tikko, who are featured on the cover. We applaud Dr. Chauvet for acknowledging the risks law enforcement faces each and every day, and through her donation of emergency equipment, helping meet a need that we hope never arises.

Santa Gets an Official Escort into Town

Rumor has it the jolly old elf will arrive at Epiphany Cathedral tomorrow by helicopter to deliver brand new bicycles to about 125 local children from different area youth charities. With just eight days to go until Christmas, and unseasonably warm temperatures, there's no guessing where else he might show up and how he might get there!

Scam Warning from Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau is issuing an urgent scam alert cautioning businesses and consumers about an email that looks like it is from BBB. The subject line reads "Complaint from your customers." The BBB says DO NOT open the email or click on the link because the email is fraudulent.

The number of email scams tend to increase this time of year. To avoid becoming a victim of cyber fraud:

Do not open or respond to unsolicited email (spam).
Do not click on links within an unsolicited email.
Be cautious of emails claiming to contain pictures in attached files. Only open attachments from known senders, and scan the attachments for viruses if possible.
Log in directly to an official website for the business mentioned in the email, instead of clicking links within the email.

To report potential e-scams, go to the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center to file a report.

Animal Adoptions Could Start Monday

With the addition of more than 40 small dogs at the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Animal Services Shelter, things are busy there! The animals taken in yesterday are being medically evaluated and treated to ready them for adoption. The EARLIEST some of these adorable little dogs will be ready to find a forever home will be Monday, December 12th. However, people interested in adoption can read more about our process and download the adoption form so they can fill it out and send it or bring it to Animal Services. Please, no phone calls until next week so every volunteer and staff member at the Shelter can share their TLC with these prospective pets.

Safeguard Your Teen Drivers With FREE Course

Each quarter, deputies with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Youth Services Section conduct a Teen Driver Challenge to give permitted and licensed teen drivers more safety experience behind the wheel. It sounds simple, but the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office wants to remind residents again about one of the best ways to deter auto burglaries: lock the doors! Auto burglary is a crime of opportunity, with at least 70 percent occurring in vehicles that are unlocked. Typically a thief will enter a community, try vehicle door handles and rummage through the ones they can open. Many times they take loose change, medications, GPS units and other valuables. Please remember these common-sense precautions and reduce your risk. Garage Sale to Benefit Animal Services Medical Fund

This is Only a Test

On Wednesday, if you are listening to the radio or watching TV at 2:00 p.m., you will hear a warning signal and then, for up two three and a half minutes the words "This is a test." Have no fear, it is the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are using this test to determine the reliability of the system and its effectiveness in notifying the public of emergencies and potential dangers nationally and regionally. Again, there is nothing to worry about, this is only a test.

Daylight Savings Time comes to an end Saturday night (technically early Sunday morning) so it's time to fall back. Turn your clocks back one hour at bed time, which is the best part for most of us since it means an extra hour of sleep. I actually read an interesting article that said DST and its longer daylight hours is credited by some for improved public safety, fewer traffic crashes and fatalities and a reduction in crime. Well, as we switch gears and go back to Standard Time when mornings have more daylight and afternoons have less, stay vigilant and don't worry - the same crime fighters will be keeping you safe on the streets.

Prescription Drug Deaths Triple in Decade

According to data released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, inappropriately used prescription pain medications kill 15,000 people in the US each year. The report goes on to say that 1 in 20 Americans age 12 and older has misused prescription painkillers like oxycodone, methadone or hydrocodone. What's worse, health officials say enough prescription painkillers were prescribed last year to medicate every adult every four hours for an entire month. In Sarasota County, the Sheriff's Office and its partners continue to educate the public about these dangers and open doors to new discussions about how to curb the problem. One way is through disposal of unused or expired prescription medication at our permanently installed drop boxes. Last Saturday during a national drug turn-in event, citizens brought 40 pounds of pharmaceutical drugs to our Sarasota and Venice locations. That's a total of 1100 pounds of pills so far this year!

Prescription Drug Awareness Events Planned

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will host two events this week to promote awareness of the prescription drug problem and give citizens an opportunity to remove unused or expired medication from their homes. On Thursday night, the NOPE Candle Light Vigil is part of a national event in memory of those lost to drug and alcohol addiction. On Saturday, the Sheriff's office will participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back initiative in Sarasota and Venice. For times and locations click on this press release. Reach Out Recovery is holding a two-day Rock & Run event this weekend at South Lido Beach Park. The fun starts Friday with a FREE concert by multiple artists from 5-9pm. Exploitation of the Elderly

For the second time in three months, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has arrested someone for Exploitation of the Elderly. In both cases, a person with Power of Attorney to care for a senior citizen's financial affairs spent more than $100,000 of the victim's money for their own personal gain. You can read about the most recent case here, but both crimes should serve as a reminder to carefully choose who handles the legal and financial affairs of senior citizens. There are many low and no-cost assistance programs in Sarasota County. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is warning citizens about an Internet scam that has been reported in other areas of Florida. Cyber criminals try to trick Microsoft users into believing their computer may be vulnerable to an attack. They contact victims on their home phone and ask them to go to their computer an follow detailed instructions under the guise of fixing the problem. However, the instructions actually give the scammer access to passwords, personal financial information and makes the computer part of a collection of compromised accounts. Drug Deaths Outnumber Traffic Fatalities in US

Drug deaths now outnumber traffic fatalities in the United States, according to a Los Angeles Times analysis of government data. Fueling the surge are prescription pain and anxiety drugs that are potent, highly addictive and especially dangerous when combined with one another or with other drugs or alcohol. This Thursday, Sarasota County citizens can learn more about the local prescription drug problem by attending "Knowledge Saves: Get the IQ on Rx" forum at Sarasota High School. Representatives from the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, the Sarasota County Health Department, First Step of Sarasota and Coastal Behavioral Health Care will hold a frank, open discussion on pharmaceutical drugs use beginning at 6:00 p.m. Parents and teens are encouraged to attend.

Following last week's arrests of one player and three coaches for an attack on a referee at a youth football game in Sarasota, we saw news coverage from across the country. Interestingly, a press release from a group called The Center for Ethical Youth Coaching came to our attention. The mission of the Center is to raise the ethical standards of coaches who work with young athletes, and they claim that incidents like the one here are unfortunately not unique. Statewide Drug Turn-In Event Saturday

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will participate in the 2nd Annual Florida Statewide Drug Turn-In event this Saturday, August 27, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event is a great opportunity for residents to clean out expired or unused prescription medications and remove them from their homes. This helps keep potent medications out of the wrong hands and provides a disposal method that is safe for the environment. Turn-in events are always anonymous and solid dosage medications such as tablets and capsules are accepted. The Sheriff's Office has permanent drop boxes in two locations: the lobby of 2071 Ringling Blvd., Sarasota, and the south county office, 4531 State Road 776 in Venice. Operation to Stop Impaired Driving

Beginning this Friday, the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office will join nearly 10,000 other law enforcement agencies around the country in an intensive crackdown on impaired driving. Operation SID (Stop Impaired Driving) will continue through September 5th, focusing resources during high-risk times such as nights and weekends when accidents involving impaired drivers occur the most. Supervisors Attend National Conference

Two members of the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office recently attended the National Association of Women Law Enforcement Executives (NAWLEE) conference in Wisconsin. Corrections Lieutenant Cynthia Van Dyke (shown in photo, left) and Law Enforcement Sergeant Debra Kaspar (shown right) attended three days of training sessions and networking with police chiefs, deputy chiefs and other female executives - including law enforcement officials from Nigeria and Haiti. Plane Crash Out East

Global Position System (GPS) satellites helped lead rescuers to two men injured in a plane crash today in eastern Sarasota County. The single engine ultralight went down in a deep canopy of oak trees about a mile east of Utopia and Diebold roads near Hi Hat Ranch. One of the men called 911 and dispatchers were able to ping their cell phone to find their location. Mounted patrol deputies who were in the area and heard the plane were able to access the crash site on horseback. Both men, who are from Sarasota, were flown to Bayfront Medical Center for treatment. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.

Deputy Assists Woman in Distress

A Sarasota County Sheriff's Deputy took quick action today and performed CPR on a woman in distress. Dep. Russell Henderson responded to a medical call at the RaceTrac on US 41 in Venice just north of Jacaranda Boulevard and was able to conduct rescue breathing and chest compressions on the victim until the ambulance arrived. The EMTs say thanks to Dep. Henderson's efforts, they were able to find a pulse before transporting the woman to the hospital. We do not have word on the woman's condition but we are certainly hoping for her full recovery. Thank you Dep. Henderson for your dedication to the people of Sarasota County!

The Sheriff's Underwater Recovery Force (SURF) took to the waters near Mote Marine yesterday to train team members for search and rescue operations. The SURF team was created some 35 years ago because of the large number of beaches, lakes and rivers in Sarasota County. These underwater specialists need to work in challenging environments, and silt and sediment can affect underwater visibility. The SURF team is called upon to search for evidence of crimes, as well as victims of drowning, water accidents or foul play. Karen was found dead in her Kensington Park home on March 31st. There is video of a person of interest leaving her car at the Sears store at Westfield Sarasota Square the same day, but little is known about her killer. Navigating a Roundabout: Tips for Drivers, Bicyclists and Pedestrians

New Technology Streamlines Jail Management

New technology being used at the Sarasota County Jail is featured in an article on a Web site dedicated to advancing the Corrections profession. The Guardian RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) system was installed locally last November. It allows correctional facilities to automate and streamline offender management, as sensors mounted throughout the jail log daily inmate activities and observations during routine security patrols. The devices allow corrections officials to scan a fixed radio tag instead of maintaining paper logs, improving the integrity of record keeping and decreasing miscommunication and operational inefficiencies, which leads to increased productivity. Prisons: Punishment or Reform?

According to a new report by the Pew Center on the States, as reported in USA Today, the number of inmates returning to state prisons within three years of release has remained steady for more than a decade. The study concludes that prison systems are failing to deter criminals from re-offending. Florida data was not included in the study, and for clarification state prisons are in a separate category from county jails, which is what we have in Sarasota County. However, I found interesting the implication that prisons should actively work to reform criminals and prison time is not in itself intended as punishment. As more state prisons are being closed due to the high cost of operation, is it realistic to expect programs to better prepare offenders for re-entry, or do you believe incarceration should be sufficient to convince offenders to stop leading a life of crime?

A Reminder About Florida's "Move Over" Law

A detective with the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is recovering after being hit by a vehicle during a traffic stop on another car on I-75 this morning. Fortunately, the detective way paying attention to his surroundings and was able to jump out of the way enough to minimize the impact of the oncoming car.

Please remember Florida's "Move Over" law. Whenever an emergency vehicle has its lights on, move over at least one lane away. It you can't because of traffic or if you're on a two lane road, slow down to 20 miles below the posted speed limit.

Busy Weekend of Community Events

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is going to be busy with community events this Saturday. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., we will hold a Community Gun Turn-in Event at two agency locations, 2400 Colson Avenue in Sarasota, and 4531 State Road 776 in Venice. Citizens receive a $50 gift card from local merchants for each functional firearm turned. The process is anonymous and the event is in response to requests from the community.

Also from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, FREE family friendly fun is on tap at the Annual 911 Open House and YMCA Healthy Kids Day, held at the County Administration Building, 1660 Ringling Blvd. in downtown Sarasota. The first 500 families receive a free fitness kit with equipment, outdoor toys and healthy living information. The event features tours of the 911 Center, the popular SWAT and Firefighter challenge courses, the YMCA summer camp experience, plus healthy food, refreshments and hourly prizes!

USA Today published another important article reporting that Facebook and Twitter are "stymied" about how to stem a rising tide of poisoned web links seeping into popular social networks. What jumped out at me was "the faith users put into social networks is providing an enormous universe of opportunity for nefarious actors." Basically, cybercriminals prey on our natural curiosity and trick users into clicking on a link that actually gives THEM full control of YOUR PC. You may or may not have read recently about a man in Sarasota County who knew he was heading to jail so he concealed a number of items in a quite unmentionable place. Well, unmentionable until his contraband was discovered and then reported by media all over the world. Today I came across a national article published on Slate.com and The National Post by someone who knew the suspect many years ago. Sarasota Springfest Saturday!

The weather is perfect for Sarasota Springfest this Saturday! This FREE family-friendly event will this year benefit the youth programs of the Police Athletic League of Sarasota County, including the PAL Sailor Circus, Pony PAL, Camp X-RAYD and Streetwise Parenting.

Springfest is held at Palmer Ranch at the corner of Sawyer Loop and Northridge roads of Clark Road. The event's two signature road events, a 5K Family Fun Walk-Run and a 12K Road Race, begin at 7:20 a.m. These sanctioned events wind through the beautiful neighborhoods of Palmer Ranch and the Legacy Trail finishing at the Springfest site.

The fun continues from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with great food, live entertainment, displays and exhibits, health screenings, a business expo, youth demonstrations and children's activities.

Management Review Interim Report

The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has issued a report card of sorts on the recommendations made in the comprehensive management review conducted when Sheriff Tom Knight took office in 2009. The Management Review Interim Report is an evaluation of the progress made on the 157 original recommendations in the 18 months following its release. The report has been organized with a color-coded key to clearly indicate what what has been accepted, not accepted, accomplished or incorporated into the Four Year (2009-2013) Strategic Plan, and explanations for each. Proposed Bill to Crack Down on Pill Mills

Congressman Vern Buchanan (FL-13) today unveiled sweeping legislation to crack down on unscrupulous pain management clinics - otherwise known as pill mills - that he says have turned Florida into the nation's storefront for illegally used prescription drugs. Sheriff Knight was on hand for this morning's announcement and echoed the need for enhanced legal remedies in the fight against pharmaceutical diversion. You can read the entire press release here.

On a related note, the Drug Enforcement Administration has created a pill mill tipline and email address to receive information about "rogue doctors who dole out powerful, addictive drugs to people who don't have a true medical need" for them. DEA Ban on Synthetic Marijuana

The Drug Enforcement Administration today put a ban on the sale of synthetic marijuana products that have previously been legal. These products, sold under the brand names of "K2", "Spice" and others have now been classified as Schedule I controlled substances. This ban strengthens law enforcement efforts to curb the use of these dangerous drugs. Sheriff Knight saw the danger of this loophole last year, and in December he asked for the voluntary compliance of all Sarasota County stores known to sell these products to stop. All the store owners that were asked complied, and these products have been more difficult to acquire in Sarasota because of this effort. Some have helped around here for decades, and however they serve this agency, volunteers are a valuable part of our community partnership. GPS Unit Could Lead Criminals to Your Door

Warnings are frequently issued to remind drivers to keep valuable electronics out of plain sight. Well here's another lesson to hammer that point home: your GPS unit could lead criminals right to your door!

Thieves break into cars and take the GPS unit plus the garage door opener if it's there. The GPS will guide them to the victim's house and the garage remote will easily get them inside.

If you have a GPS unit, DO NOT program it with your home address. Enter a nearby intersection or business so directions take you close to home but no one else using your GPS would know where you lived. If your GPS has a key lock, use it. And if you use a garage door opener, conceal it in the glove compartment or carry it with you.

Finally, many homeowners don't lock the door leading from the garage into the house. Please add that extra layer of difficulty for potential thieves!

Observant Neighbors Help Deputies Nab Burglar

An interesting follow-up to our four-part blog series "Things a Burglar Won't Tell You"... a Sarasota woman returned home Wednesday morning to find a burglar in her house. When she called 9-1-1 the suspect ran out the back door and a neighbor spotted him jumping the fence. The neighbor gave chase as another witness also called for help. Responding deputies located the suspect and a pillowcase full of stolen goods, plus burglary tools and gloves.

Knowing your neighbors - as well as who belongs in your neighborhood and who doesn't - is a key crime prevention tool. We're glad no one was hurt in this incident and grateful that good samaritans were willing to get involved.

Part four of our crime prevention series, "Things a Burglar Won't Tell You," wraps up the series for now. But we'll certainly have more in the weeks to come.

You're right: I won't have enough time to break into the safe that's keeping your valuables. but if it's not bolted down I'll take it with me.
Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms.
A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy an inexpensive device that works on a timer and simulates the glow of a real television.

We're half-way through our crime prevention series, "Things a Burglar Won't Tell You," and judging by the feedback, you appreciate the common sense tips as well. Here are the next three:

It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella and you forget to lock your door (understandable). But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather.
I always knock first. If you answer I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. DON'T take me up on it.
Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table and the medicine cabinet.
